The festive season is approching, and unfortunately that brings an increase in theft and robberies. Here are some tips to secure your home and belongings before the festive season gets in full swing.
- SECURITY SYSTEM
The best way to protect your home is with an alarm system and CCTV. You can even monitor your home from your smartphone. It’s also reassuring to know that your security company is only a few minutes away should the alarm go off. - SOCIAL MEDIA
Even though you can’t wait to be on the beach, don’t advertise your holiday news on social media. You never know what information people can find out about you on public platforms. - HOUSE-SITTER
Organise a house-sitter who you trust or who comes highly recommended. This allows you to completely relax while you’re on holiday. - CALL IN FAVOURS
If you can’t arrange a house-sitter, ask a neighbour, friend or family member to pop in occasionally. You need someone to take out the rubbish bins, collect post, feed your pets and water your plants. - EXTERNAL MAINTENANCE
Having an overgrown lawn and garden is a sure sign that you’re away, so before you leave, mow the lawn, rake up the leaves and water your plants. - LIGHTS ON OR OFF?
It’s tempting to leave the lights on while you’re away, but it’s suspicious if they’re on throughout the night. Rather invest in a timer that will automatically switch the lights on and off according to a schedule. It’ll also reduce your electricity bill. - LOCK UP
Before you leave, inspect your property and ensure that all doors, windows and gates are securely locked. Disconnect your garage door and lock it manually and don’t leave your spare key in a “safe” hiding spot. - SECURE VALUABLES
Whatever items of value you’re leaving at home – make sure they’re securely stored away. Put them in a safe if you have one, or at least out of plain sight.
